National Dog Day at a Flower Shop?

August 24th, 2011

August 26 is National Dog Day. It’s always the 26th of August. The purpose of having a day set out to recognize dogs is two-fold. The first is to honor dogs and the ways they enrich human lives, but also to increase awareness about homeless dogs, animal abuse, and encourage people to rescue dogs from shelters.

What does this have to do with a flower shop? Well first of all the owners of Annie’s Main Street Floral: The Layton Funeral Florist, are dog lovers. Once in a while you can stop in and visit with Loki the Great Dane, and Buddy the Labrador Retriever.

Also, you can “chuck your change,” in our jar, which will be donated to the local animal shelter to help house and feed pets in need of a forever home.

Send Flowers to Someone Who’s Lost a Pet

August 14th, 2011

I recently lost a pet. Her name was Lucy, Lucy the Cat. To someone like myself, pets are companions that we become very attached to. I have been so grateful to those who have expressed sympathy and sent flowers after the loss of my sweet Lucy.

Flowers are such an appropriate gift to send to someone who is grieving the loss of a pet. I would like to thank the Layton Veterinary Hospital for their kind care of Lucy and their consideration of my feelings as well. Many of us are touched by the happiness that comes with pet ownership. It stings just as much when they leave us. The thoughtfulness of friends during this time is so appreciated. A beautiful flower arrangement or planter in memorium is a reflection of that thoughtfulness. Flowers for sympathy are a perfect way to express our feelings through mother nature’s beauty.

Signs of Intelligence Include Sending Flowers

July 15th, 2011

Giving flowers isn’t just a flight of fancy kind of thing. Did you know that according to research from Rutgers University, men and women who give flowers are seen as emotionally intelligent?

This is especially true when fostering friendships and relationships. Of course, you don’t send flowers to look emotionally intelligent to people, but it doesn’t hurt. And you probably are emotionally intelligent, because you’ve made the very smart decision to send flowers.

Flowers for a Military Wife

July 14th, 2011

I delivered flowers to a woman today who has been a recipient of flower deliveries in the past.  The flowers were from her wonderful husband who serves in the United States Air Force, stationed at Hill Air Force Base right here in Layton, Utah.  Actually, he currently serves in Afghanistan. He made sure that his wife got flowers on their wedding anniversary which is today.

Three years ago, just before being deployed to Iraq, he set up a delivery for her once a month while he served overseas. We were so thankful he came home then, now we are hopeful he comes home soon.

Please thank someone for their military service whenever you can, including acknowledging their families.

Can We Put Flowers on the Casket?

July 12th, 2011

Many people who have never planned a funeral before have questions about the proper procedures to go through for a funeral service.

It is generally an accepted practice to place a floral arrangement on top of the casket, unless the casket will be draped with something like a flag, for example. There are some groups or religious organizations that have special cloths or banners that are placed on the casket and this will depend upon the affiliations of the deceased person. In this case, the floral arrangement won’t be placed on the casket, but can be arranged to stand at the side of the casket.

There are many ways to express sentiment through flowers, and there is no more perfect expression than that of sympathy in a floral arrangement. If you have questions about what is appropriate for a funeral flower arrangement, call your local florist and they would be happy to tell you about the local customs as well as national customs for funeral flowers.

Who is the Layton Funeral Florist?

July 11th, 2011

The Layton Funeral Florist is located at Annie’s Main Street Floral in Layton Utah. I’m the owner, my name is Annie Whittaker. I started out in the flower business as a delivery driver.  Every day I would watch the designers at the store where I worked, and tried to learn as much as I could, because I realized that floral design was something I was meant to do. I just kind of fell into the business, but I realized my calling when I got the job.

One holiday, we were short on designers and I offered my help. It turned out pretty well, and here I am today. I was able to purchase the shop where I work in 2001. I can’t believe it was that long ago! The shop was all ready to be sold to someone else, and I was devastated that I was too late in finding out about the sale. Months later, things changed and I was contacted by the seller. The rest is history.

I grew up in Layton and I consider it my hometown. We have a tight knit community here and I consider the people here to be my friends and my family. I’m so happy to have the pleasure of helping you express your thoughts and feelings to someone who needs it here in this town.
